Via Openbook

The VIA OpenBook mini-note utilizes the VIA C7-M ULV processor and VIA VX800 digital media IGP chipset, packing some great functionality into a small, 1kg, 8.9” mini notebook form. The screen can provide resolutions of up to 1024x600, and this is powered by the VIA Chrome9 DirextX 9.0 3D graphics. Also packed into this unit are up to 2GB of DDR2 DRAM, and options are available for a hard disk drive or solid state storage.

Additional functionality is added with Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth capabilities and AGPS, WiMAX, EVDO/W-CDMA or HSDPA options. The 2 megapixel webcam is fully integrated, allowing you to chat face to face with friends and family around the world. Top all of that off with three USB ports, a VGA port and a 4-in-1 media card reader, and you’ve got yourself a very handy little notebook.

The press release on the VIA OpenBook states that this mini-laptop can provide up to three hours of battery life using the 4-cell 2600mA lithium-ion battery. It can also support Microsoft Windows Vista Basic operating system, Windows XP or a variety of Linux distributions.

VIA OpenBook Netbook Specifications

  • 8.9″ screen @ 1024×600. Not the highest res possible on the 8.9″ screen but presumably a trade-off between cost and features. The PPI at this resolution should appeal to a wider age-range of customers.
  • VIA C7-M at 1.6Ghz. Within the specifications laid down by Microsoft for cheap versions of XP after June 30th this year.
  • Memory up to 2GB
  • Storage options for HDD and flash.
  • VX800 Chipset. The latest integrated north/southbridge with hardware acceleration for many common video formats.
  • Dual internal module options. One that will support Wifi, Bluetooth and an option for A-GPS. The second, free for a 3G module. (Wi-Max, HSDPA, EV-DO/W-CDMA)
  • Three USB ports, VGA out, 4-in-1 card reader, dual-head web cam (Forward and rear facing) and audio in/out jacks
  • 4-cell, 2600mah battery providing up to 3 hours life.
  • Size: 240mmx175×36.2(max) which is slightly larger than the Eee PC 900 but smaller than the HP 2133 Mini-Note
  • Weight will be 1KG

iPhone

Product summary

The good: The Apple iPhone has a stunning display, a sleek design, and an innovative multitouch user interface. Its Safari browser makes for a superb Web surfing experience, and it offers easy-to-use apps. As an iPod, it shines.

The bad: The Apple iPhone has variable call quality and lacks some basic features found in many cell phones, including stereo Bluetooth support and 3G compatibility. Integrated memory is stingy for an iPod, and you have to sync the iPhone to manage music content.

The bottom line: Despite some important missing features, a slow data network, and call quality that doesn't always deliver, the Apple iPhone sets a new benchmark for an integrated cell phone and MP3 player.
